The case study below shows that this patient presented with a large amount of calculus (tartar) and staining on the back of the lower front teeth. As can be seen, this was irritating the gums and causing them to become inflamed – a key sign of periodontal (gum) disease. Left untreated, this can lead to local problems, such as gum recession, bone loss and tooth movement or loss, as well as systemic problems such as double the risk of cardiovascular (heart) disease.
Afterwards the improvement can clearly be seen, with the gums looking a much more healthy pink colour, showing the inflammation has gone, as well as looking far better with the removal of the staining.
